Comparison of different methods of determining land surface reflectance for AOD retrieval

Determining land surface reflectance (LSR) is important for satellite retrieval of aerosol optical depth (AOD). Many studies have focused on the development AOD through using different determination algorithms. However, there still lack a comprehensive comparison among those In this study, algorithms with assumptions were compared and analyzed Advanced Himawari Imager (AHI) data. The results demonstrate that retrieved by algorithm considering bidirectional distribution function (BRDF) effects (Method 3) has higher accuracy than based dark target 1) second lowest 2) methods. overall correlation coefficient between retrievals BRDF AERONET measurements 0.93 Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) 0.13. addition, are 68.91 % matchups falling within expected error (±0.05 ± 0.2 × AERONET). Method 3 shows more robust performance other two methods seasons, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) values scattering angles. It also advantages in urban regions relatively high LSR. 2 show best agreement MODIS 1 km product, while AODs much closer to 10 AODs. differences annual average AHI can be 0.13 at 11:00 (Beijing Time) over Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region, which could cause 23.6Wm-2 discrepancy when calculating direct radiative effect (DARE) bottom atmosphere.
